Donor-Advised Funds

APCF offers donors the option of setting up a Donor-Advised Fund (DAF), a philanthropic vehicle that allows donors to centralize charitable dollars in one convenient account – providing maximum tax advantages as well as flexibility of grant making. From the DAF, the donor (or a committee appointed by the donor) recommends eligible charitable organizations for grants. For an additional fee, APCF will run a full grant process to solicit agencies to apply for funding based on the donor’s giving priorities.

The advantage of creating a DAF with APCF is that our staff can help educate and guide the funding decisions of donors who may be less familiar with the diverse range of nonprofit organizations serving the Asian and Pacific Islander (API) community. APCF has a long history as a leader in the API community, providing assurance that funds will be channeled to programs that best address the donor’s giving priorities.

In addition, donors may make a donation today to benefit from the tax deduction but distribute the funds at a later time. This may be an advantageous option for donors who may not know at this time how they want their funds distributed and/or because donors may want to accumulate additional funds for a larger distribution at a given time.

IMPACT

ADVANTAGES OF A DONOR-ADVISED FUND AT APCF

  1. Easy to Begin – all you need to do is sign the agreement and make a minimum contribution of $1,000.

  2. Maximum Tax Advantage – you receive an immediate tax deduction for each contribution you make to your fund. When you contribute marketable securities, real estate, or stock, you also avoid capital gains taxes.

  3. Accumulate Charitable Dollars for Greater Impact – you may accumulate your charitable dollars in your fund and make a larger grant or distribution to a charity at a later time.

  4. Low Cost to Administer – APCF charges a low annual fee of 1.5% of the balance assessed monthly, with a minimum annual cost per Donor-Advised Fund of $150. (Fee is assessed quarterly for invested funds.)

  5. Affordable Alternative to a Private Family Foundation – your charitable giving is made with ease and cost effectively, without the limitations, expenses, and onerous financial and legal requirements associated with a private foundation.

  6. Create a Family Legacy/Honor a Loved One – you may name a Donor-Advised Fund for your family, and grants issued from that fund will carry your family’s name now and for the next generation. It’s a gift that can keep on growing. Once established, anyone can make tax-deductible contributions to your fund at any time, in any amount. You and/or your family participate in the grant making process by identifying specific charities or worthwhile projects, and recommending grants to support them.

  7. Knowledge and Expertise – APCF staff is available to share extensive philanthropic experience, knowledge, and expertise of the Asian and Pacific Islander communities, provide information about emerging issues and giving opportunities, and assist you in your grant making.

  8. 10 Grants Allowed Per Calendar Year – APCF issues up to 10 grant distribution checks from your fund at no charge. Additional grant checks can be made for a nominal fee. Minimal grant recommendation is $100.
