  • Asians and Pacific Islanders total over 12 million nationwide and are a rapidly growing group; Census 2000 revealed that the API population grew 75% between 1990 and 2000.

  • The Asian Pacific Islander population represents 13% of California's total population, and is the third largest racial/ethnic group (1.3 million) in Los Angeles County -- larger than that of any state in the nation (except California).

  • In 2004, Asians and Pacific Islanders comprised only 0.4% of all foundation giving in 2004, steadily decreasing from 0.5% in 2003 and 0.6% in 2002.

  • The Asian Pacific Islander population is comprised of more than 49 distinct ethnic groups and a multitude of cultures speaking more than 100 languages and dialects.

  • Pacific Islanders and many Southeast Asian groups are among the most poverty stricken and least educated in Southern California.

  • Asian groups have alarmingly high rates of limited English proficiency and linguistic isolation - more than 85% of the populations in ten Asian groups speak a language other than English at home.

  • Asians have a higher rate of senior poverty compared to the general population: 12% versus the county average of 10%.
