The Asian Pacific Community Fund offers major donors the option of setting up a Donor Advised Fund through which to make charitable contributions directly to our member agencies or other reputable 501(c)(3) not for profit organizations.

The Donor Advised Fund is held by the Asian Pacific Community Fund where the donor, or a committee appointed by the donor, may recommend eligible charitable recipients for grants from the fund. Furthermore, based on donor preferences, APCF may run a full grant process to solicit agencies for programs in need of funding and that meet the donor giving priority(s).

The advantage of creating a Donor Advised Fund through the Asian Pacific Community Fund is that our staff can help to educate and guide the funding decisions of donors who may be unfamiliar with the broad and diverse range of nonprofit organizations in the Asian Pacific Islander community. APCF has a long history as a leader in the Asian Pacific Islander community, providing assurance that funds will be channeled to programs that best address the donor's priority giving areas.

In addition, donors may make a donation today to benefit from the tax deduction but distribute the funds at a later time. This may be an advantageous option for donors who may not know at this time how they want their funds distributed and/or because donors may want to accumulate additional funds for a larger distribution at a given time.

Russell Sakaguchi for Worksite Wellness L.A. Fund

Worksite Wellness L.A. (WWLA) establishes the Russell Sakaguchi Fund in memory of its longtime Board Chair, Russell Sakaguchi and continues his work in building bridges between the Latino and Asian-American communities in Los Angeles.  WWLA partners with local Asian-American community organizations, and business associations in order to provide small and medium size business owners resources and health plan information for their Latino workers at their worksite. WWLA provides enrollment assistance to health and human services programs and multicultural health education, including cancer prevention and nutrition education.

Success Stories From Carmen, WWLA staff:

“She’s going to help,” said one of my regular clients from American Apparel to her brother.  She brought him and his four children to my office.  He had been out of work for a month and was worried about how he was going to feed his wife and four children.  They had decided to apply for Medi-cal and emergency food stamps.  They filled out all the documents, but there was one form that needed to be signed by his previous employer to verify the last day of his employment.  Unfortunately the company was in Sun Valley, and they were not able to get there easily from South LA. In addition, the owner of the company and former employer spoke limited English and the family only spoke Spanish.  I called the owner of the company and explained their situation and what they needed.  The owner of the company was familiar with us, and had received educational materials we sent him in the past. He was able to quickly sign the form and fax it back to me that very day.  The client was extremely grateful and left the office immediately to go submit the form to his eligibility worker.

As a small nonprofit with a limited budget and personnel, much of our outreach is done by our clients through simple word of mouth.  While assisting a worker at American Apparel she shared with me that her grand children did not have health insurance and so I gave her my contact info and told her that she could have her daughter call me.  Her daughter, who works in a financial services office, contacted me shortly thereafter and explained that she could not miss work to come into the office, but wanted badly to get insurance for her children. I explained that I could assist her without her coming in-person.  We worked via phone and fax and soon her children were enrolled.  The most interesting fact about this case is that she, who was referred to me by her mother, now refers all of her co-workers. To this day, since 2004, she still tells new employees about Worksite Wellness LA.
