Asians And Pacific Islanders With Disabilities Of California Announces Student Conference Poster Com (8:00 am)
Los Angeles, CA – Asians and Pacific Islanders with Disabilities of California (APIDC) is announcing its first poster competition open to students with disabilities. The posters must reflect the theme for this year’s conference, “Self-Determination.” All submissions must be entered by Friday, October 1st, 2010. The top ten posters winners will be showcased at the APIDC statewide conference on October 29th and 30th at the Westin Hotel in downtown Long Beach, California. The APIDC conference brings together consumers, families, agency representatives and advocates finding effective mechanisms to deliver culturally competent resources to Asian and Pacific Islander (API) families. A key component of these conferences has been exploring ways to educate not only API families on how to better access resources, but also to educate health and service providers on the specific barriers facing APIs with disabilities, and to ensure the provision of culturally competent service delivery systems. APIDC, a California non-profit organization, has hosted three major conferences in California: Los Angeles (1999), the Bay Area (2001), and Orange County (2005). www.apidisabilities.org. APIDC's goal is to bridge the service and cultural barriers that APIs with disabilities and their families may face. APIDC’s purpose is to act as the technical assistance network to interconnect disabilities organizations with API communities, API individuals with disabilities and their families. The conference is co-sponsored by numerous agencies and community based organizations throughout Southern California. This year’s honorary conference committee is chaired by Long Beach Mayor’s wife Nancy Foster, who has been an advocate of raising awareness about disabilities.
